What documents and money do I need?

IRCC works in two layers: a short set of documents every applicant includes, and recommended supporting evidence matched to your situation. Online applicants also get a personalised checklist generated from their own answers — start with the question closest to yours.

QUESTION 01

What documents does every applicant include?

A valid passport copy, the application form (IMM 5257), family information, and a photograph that meets IRCC's specifications — each applicant completes and signs their own form. Read the documents checklist

QUESTION 02

What supporting evidence does IRCC recommend?

Travel history, your itinerary, bank statements, an employer letter and proof of your relationship with your host — presented by IRCC as recommended evidence, not as a compulsory pile. Read the documents checklist

QUESTION 03

Is there a minimum bank balance IRCC requires?

No fixed minimum is published. IRCC's framing is evidence-based: at least 6 months of account details, including balances, helps it judge whether you have enough money for your stay. Read the documents checklist

QUESTION 04

What photograph does IRCC require?

Two identical photographs taken within the last six months, frame at least 35 mm x 45 mm, against a plain white or light-coloured background — photos that miss the specifications must be replaced before processing. Read the documents checklist

QUESTION 05

My host is my child or grandchild — what must their invitation letter cover?

For a Super Visa the signed letter must promise financial support for your authorised stays and list the family-size and income details IRCC asks for; for ordinary visits, you must show proof of your relationship with the person inviting you. Read the Super Visa guide

QUESTION 06

What if my documents are not in English or French?

Each one needs its English or French translation, plus a translator's affidavit when the translator is not certified — and the translation must not be done by you or your family members. Read the documents checklist
