F-1 Readiness Check

This is a self-check against guidance AllVisaUpdates has already published. It is not an assessment of any real case. Consular officers decide every case on its own facts.

Answer each question for your own situation as it stands today. There are five areas. Each area gives its own result and links to the one guide for that area.

Funding evidence

Have you checked your funding plan against the costs and funding shown on your Form I-20?
Is the money in your plan money that can actually be drawn on when your fees are due?
If a loan is part of your funding, can you state exactly what stage it has reached?
Can you explain who is paying, and where that money came from?

Answer all the questions in this area to see the result for this area.

Ties to home country

Can you describe your genuine plans after your authorised period of study?
Can you name the ties that bind you to your home country?
Have you prepared your ties and intent to depart as a topic in its own right, separate from your funding?
Is everything you plan to say about your ties and plans true and your own?

Answer all the questions in this area to see the result for this area.

Academic preparation

Can you explain, in your own words, why you chose this university and this program?
Can you explain how this program connects to your previous education or work?
Can you give a plain, accurate timeline of your qualifications, work, and any gaps or subjects you retook?
Have you gathered the academic evidence for your studies so far?

Document readiness

Do you have the full required set for the interview?

The required set: passport valid for travel and for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay (unless exempt by country-specific agreements); printed DS-160 confirmation page; application fee payment receipt, if you were required to pay before your interview; one printed photo, if your DS-160 upload failed; and your Form I-20, signed by you and your school official.

Have you checked your core documents against each other?
Have you paid the I-901 SEVIS fee, and does your receipt match your I-20?
Is your supporting evidence assembled, kept separate from the required set, and organised so you can find an item quickly?

Interview preparation

Have you done the night-before checks on your documents and your appointment?
Are you preparing your own facts by topic, rather than memorising answers written by someone else?
Do you know what happens on the day, and have you read your own post's instructions?
Can you answer questions about your application history directly, exactly as you answered on your form?

Use the guide linked for each area to work through anything you have not covered yet. This check covers published guidance only. For questions about your own circumstances, follow official instructions and ask your designated school official (DSO) or a qualified U.S. immigration attorney.

General information only. This guide is based on official sources publicly available and checked on the date shown on this page. Visa rules change, and consular and USCIS officers decide every case on its own facts — nothing here is a confirmation or a guarantee for your individual case, and this is not legal advice. Always confirm the current requirement on the official page linked in this guide before you act, and consider a qualified immigration attorney for your specific situation.
