F-1 Preparation Timeline: Plan Around Your School and Official Deadlines

Build a flexible plan around real admission deadlines, your I-20 start date and official application instructions. Historical intake calendars and fee assumptions are not current policy.

Use actual school deadlines

Begin with the application and funding deadlines for the schools you are considering. Test requirements, decision dates, deposits, financial-document reviews and I-20 issuance vary by institution. There is no universal month when every school issues I-20s.

Ask the school when it can issue your I-20 and what documents it needs. Verify the start date, cost estimate, SEVIS ID and personal information before proceeding.

Separate visa issuance from initial entry

State Department guidance generally allows visas for new F/M students to be issued up to 365 days before the course start date. New students generally may not enter more than 30 days before that date. These are different rules; the initial-entry restriction is not a reason to delay an otherwise eligible visa application.

Continuing students and students on practical training must check the rules for their own travel. Confirm current guidance before making plans.

Plan payments and appointments using current instructions

  • Review the I-901 requirements for your actual SEVIS record. Retain payment evidence and confirm any transfer or repayment rule if plans change.
  • Complete the DS-160 accurately. Follow current India scheduling instructions for payment, booking and any biometrics requirement.
  • Check the visa fee receipt’s booking/validity rules rather than assuming that attendance must occur within a particular period.
  • Do not infer a universal I-901 expiry or advise delaying an interview solely from a generic fee-validity statement. Ask the school and consult the official fee guidance.

Build a case-specific buffer

Appointment availability, document corrections, administrative processing and passport return can all affect timing. No fixed buffer guarantees arrival by the school start date. Start when you are eligible and have the required documents; use actual available appointments and your school’s latest arrival rules to assess risk.

If dates become tight, discuss deferral or other permitted arrangements with the DSO. Do not assume that an urgent appointment or quick issuance will be available.

Preparation sequence

  • Compare programs, costs and genuine funding options.
  • Meet the institution’s admission and financial-document requirements.
  • Review the issued I-20 and official visa/fee instructions.
  • Complete the required application, payment and appointment steps.
  • Prepare accurate documents and truthful explanations of study plans, funding and circumstances.
  • After issuance, check travel documents and plan arrival within the rules applicable to your case.
  • Report to the school as instructed and maintain student status.
